Dentistry @ University Pointe
Dr. Brian Caesar and Dr. Mitchell Poole

What is the difference between DDS and DMD?

The designations, DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine), are actually the same degree with different names. Both require identical education, training, and licensing. The only real difference is what each dental school chooses to call the degree.

Our Doctors' Credentials

At Dentistry at UP, Dr. Brian Ceasar holds a DMD, while Dr. Mitchell Pool earned his DDS. Despite the different letters after their names, both doctors completed the same rigorous four-year dental program after their undergraduate studies, passed the same national and state board exams, and maintain the same high standards of care.

Why the Different Names?

The naming difference dates back to the 1800s, when some dental schools adopted the Latin term (Medicinae Doctoris) while others used the English translation. Today, dental schools choose one designation or the other based on their university's preference, nothing more.

Skill and Expertise Are What Matter

What truly matters when choosing a dentist in West Chester, OH, isn't whether they have DDS or DMD after their name, but their experience, continuing education, and commitment to patient care. Both Dr. Ceasar and Dr. Pool bring exceptional skill and dedication to every patient they serve, and Dr. Pool also holds board certification in pediatric dentistry.
